All you beach detectorists , have you got your £20 permit yet for detecting on the beach? Don't forget you need one for each beach so if you go to Bournemouth & Poole or Weymouth & castle beach you will need TWO !!

Any feedback from anyone on this yet?

I have checked with the Beach control at the Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, who tell me that no permit is needed to detect on Weymouth or surrounding beaches.

They do however expect no detecting beteen 10am and 6pm when the beach is populated, which I know club members respect.

Hope that this helps ( You Bournemouth people are richer than us poor WEYMOUTHIANS anyway!!)

When on Swanage beach, they expect searchers to have one of their own permits, which you don't have to pay for

I do wish people would find out the facts before posting information which can be misleading to new members.Apart from which I asked my son who is a member of Dorsets finest and he said"do you seriously think we are going to traipse all over the beach to feel your collar when there are real crims to nick?"I dont think Customs and Excise will be giving us much trouble either>

Frank... Which facts are misleading? If you do not believe me then ring the Beach control at the W.P.B.C. They have the powers to evict people who are detecting when the beach is populated.

Do we seriously want the council to enforce permits or even ban metal detecting all together? As responsible club members we are expected to abide by the rules.

Paul, my comments were leaning towards Mikea not you.I have read similar comments in the treasure hunter from the Norfolk club about the same thing.Well if it comes up in parliament I hope the federation takes up the case.I still feel it could well be a law that will never be used due to the fact they will have to have uniformed people patrolling the beaches all around England. Hang on though, these PCSO,s are looking to enlarge their duties!

I only put this on to see what response I got. I have seen & read numerous correspondence from the NCMD about this and talked to many friends on MLO.com etc and they feel that it will happen but that it will be difficult to police. I am glad people are taking an interest because if we ever have to campaign against this or any other restrictions we need as many people as possible to know whats going on.

OK fair comment Mikea.I seem to remember when I first took up detecting hundreds of years ago that I had to buy a thing called a Pipe Licence ,and it cost ten and sixpence and dont ask me to convert that.I then went merrily about with my trusty garrard machine feeling I was well within the law.I never ever was challenged as to if I had a licence,and I suspect this is what will happen if it ever comes in.Besides with the things one can do on computers it would,nt take me long to knock up a copy, not that I would do such a thing and deprive her Majesty of money she may well need to keep up the palace!!!

Have a read of the letters section in the latest copy of Treasure Hunting magazine there is a letter in a similar vein to my comments.

Hi all
I am coming down to Charmouth Dorset for my summer holls in July, I dont know what the state of play with beach detecting is in Dorset, I know that the crown estates have changed there tack with the permits but i cant seem to find how to apply for one on there web site.
perhaps someone can let me know.
also can anyone help me obtain any land to while the odd hour away?

Hi Guys and ladies,

Hope no body minds but I contacted Weymouth & Portland Council and had a conversation with Kevin Good Weymouth's Beach Controller. 01305 838511

He was very approachable and helpful, he pointed out at this time there was no permit required by Weymouth Council as they have had very little cause over the years because Weymouth Metal Detecting Club have kept to its gentleman agreement many years ago.
Although members should be aware that times are resticted before & after 10.00am to 18.00hrs to allow beach users unresticted access to the beach and as far as he is aware this has been complied with. He speaks very highly of Weymouth's Metal Detecting Club and feels at this time there is no need for a permit system, however should members feel that this would be a good thing he would be willing to consider it and NO there would not be a charge. he also pointed out that he would be willing to come to a club meeting and discuss what club members want and how any ideas would benefit all concerned. He said you may well need permits for other beaches up and down the counrty but he is happy as things are and he is very happy at the way we currently conduct ourselfs. So if you feel we need to call him in for a chat then maybe we could get Paul to invite him, but as my granddad use to say if its working then don't fiddle with it. all the best nigel

Unfortunately We travel back to Norfolk on the 18th of July.
Still trying to track down a little bit of land though.
